How to Document Project Assumptions in the Project Management Center

In our previous article, we walked through the process of creating a new project. Once a project is up and running, it is critical to document the foundational agreements and conditions that the project relies upon. In project management, these are known as Assumptions.

Recording assumptions helps set clear expectations, mitigates risk, and ensures everyone is on the same page. In this guide, we show you how to record project assumptions directly under your project record using the Project Management Center.

What you will do: Open a project record, go to the PSC Project Assumptions related list, complete the New PSC Project Assumption form, and save.

Step 1: Access the Project Record

Begin by navigating to the PSC Projects tab and selecting the specific project you are working on (e.g., Sales Cloud Implementation - Acme Inc).

You will land on the project record detail page. Here, you can see high-level summary information at the top, including the Project Status (Green), End Date, and Project Phase. Below this, you will see two main tabs: Related and Details.

Note: The Details tab, as seen in the screenshot below, provides a comprehensive view of all the core fields you filled out during project creation, such as Budget Tracker Links and Start Dates.

Step 2: Navigate to the Assumptions Related List

To add an assumption, click the Related tab.

Scroll down the page until you locate the PSC Project Assumptions related list. This section displays all the assumptions currently logged for this project (indicated by the "(0)" next to the name, meaning there are currently none).

Click the New button on the right side of the "PSC Project Assumptions" header to create a new record.

Step 3: Fill Out the New Assumption Form

A modal window titled "New PSC Project Assumption" will appear. Fill out the following fields to document your assumption:

  1. Name (Required): Give the assumption a clear, concise title (e.g., "Salesforce Instance").
  2. Assumption: Use this text box to detail the specific condition. For example: "Customer will grant access to sandbox orgs for development, qa and uat."
  3. Source: Document where this assumption originated (e.g., "SOW" for Statement of Work).
  4. Owner: This will default to the System Admin or the user creating the record.
  5. Currency: Select the appropriate currency (e.g., USD - U.S. Dollar).
  6. PSC Project: This field will automatically populate with the project you navigated from (Sales Cloud Implementation - Acme Inc).
  7. Include on Status Report: Check this box if you want this specific assumption to be visible in the client-facing status reports you generate later.

Before you save: Only Name is required, but check Include on Status Report for any assumption your client should see.

Step 4: Save the Record

Once all fields are populated, click the Save button at the bottom of the window.

After saving, you will be returned to the project record's "Related" tab. The "PSC Project Assumptions" related list will now show (1), and your new assumption will be listed there for easy reference.

Success! Your assumption is saved and listed on the project record.

Why This Matters

By utilizing this related list, you keep all project constraints and agreements centralized. This prevents assumptions from getting lost in emails or static documents.
