How to Log Project Issues in the Project Management Center
In our last article, we covered how to document Project Assumptions. However, as projects progress, things don't always go according to plan. When blockers arise, delays occur, or unexpected problems surface, it is critical to log them immediately.
In the Project Management Center, these blockers are tracked as PSC Project Issues. In this guide, we will walk you through how to log a new project issue so your team can track it, assign ownership, and work toward a resolution.
Step 1: Navigate to the Issues Related List
Begin by opening the specific project record you are managing (e.g., Sales Cloud Implementation - Acme Inc).
Once on the project record, click on the Related tab. Scroll down until you find the PSC Project Issues related list.
You will see a count in parentheses indicating how many open issues currently exist (in this case, 0). To log a new issue, click the New button on the right side of the "PSC Project Issues" header (indicated by the red arrow).
Step 2: Complete the New Issue Form
A modal window titled "New PSC Project Issue" will appear. Fill out the following fields to accurately document the problem:
- Name (Required): Give the issue a brief, descriptive title (e.g., "UAT Testers are delayed").
- Issue Description: Provide detailed context. For example: "Customer designated UAT testers are not going to be available on the scheduled dates."
- Reported By: Enter the name of the person who identified the issue (e.g., "Rahul Jain (PM)").
- Owner: Assign the person responsible for resolving the issue. This is often a customer stakeholder or a specific team member.
System Information (Right Side):
- Owner & Currency: These fields will default to the system admin and the project's default currency.
- PSC Project: This will automatically link to the current project (Sales Cloud Implementation - Acme Inc), ensuring the issue stays associated with the correct record.
- Include on Status Report: Check this box if you want this specific issue to appear on external status reports. (Note: You may want to uncheck this for internal issues that the client does not need to see).
- Status: Set the initial status of the issue (e.g., "Open").
Step 3: Save the Issue
Once all fields are populated, click the Save button at the bottom of the window.
After saving, the modal will close, and you will be returned to the project's Related tab. The "PSC Project Issues" related list will now show a count of (1), displaying your new issue with its name, issue number, description, and created date.
Why This Matters
Logging issues directly under the project record ensures that nothing falls through the cracks. By assigning an Owner and tracking the Status, you create accountability.
Pro Tip: Don't forget to update the Status of the issue (e.g., to "In Progress" or "Closed") as work progresses.
