How to Record Project Key Decisions in the Project Management Center
Welcome back to our series on mastering the Project Management Center. So far, we've covered how to navigate the app, create a new project, log project assumptions, and track project issues.
In this article, we will focus on PSC Project Key Decisions.
Throughout the lifecycle of a project, important choices are made—whether it's adjusting a timeline, changing a scope, or approving a new technical approach. Documenting these decisions creates a vital audit trail, prevents future miscommunication, and ensures the whole team understands the "why" behind project changes. Here is how to log them.
Step 1: Navigate to the Key Decisions Related List
Start by opening the project record you are working on (e.g., Sales Cloud Implementation - Acme Inc).
Click on the Related tab. Scroll down the page until you locate the PSC Project Key Decisions related list. (In the screenshot, you'll notice we already have 1 open issue logged under the "PSC Project Issues" section right above it).
To log a new decision, click the New button on the right side of the "PSC Project Key Decisions" header (indicated by the red arrow).
Step 2: Fill Out the New Key Decision Form
A modal window titled "New PSC Project Key Decision" will open. Complete the following fields to document the decision:
- Name (Required): Provide a clear, concise summary of the decision. In our example, we used "Sprint 1 Demos Pushed By One Week."
- Date Decision Reached: Select the date the decision was finalized (e.g., *10/1/2026*).
- Decision Description: This is the most important field. Document the context and rationale behind the decision. For example: "Due to labor day week - long holidays; customer requested to push sprint 1 demos by one week."
System Information (Right Side):
- Owner & Currency: These will auto-populate based on your system defaults and project settings (e.g., System Admin and USD).
- PSC Project: This will automatically link to the current project (Sales Cloud Implementation - Acme Inc).
- Include on Status Report: Check this box if you want this key decision to be visible to the customer on the next status report you generate.
Step 3: Save the Decision
Once all fields are complete, click the Save button.
You will be returned to the project's Related tab, where the "PSC Project Key Decisions" related list will now show a count of (1), displaying your new decision along with its decision number, date, and description for future reference.
Why This Matters
By logging key decisions in the Project Management Center rather than relying on scattered emails or meeting notes, you create a single source of truth. If a stakeholder asks, "Why were the demos pushed back?" months from now, you have a clear, timestamped record of the customer's request and the rationale behind it.
